STA312 Assignment 8

Quiz in Lecture Monday Nov. 12th at 11:10 a.m.

The quiz on this assignment would ordinarily be on Friday Nov. 9th in tutorial. There will be no quiz that day, in order for you to have more time to get help from Christine if necessary. The "quiz" on Monday Nov. 12th will be very quick -- just circling a few descriptive statistiics and handing your printouts in. The following week you'll have a more substantial computer assignment involving structural equation modelling.

PERU DATA

The file peru.data contains data from a a study that was conducted by some anthropologists to determine the long-term effects of change in environment on blood pressure. In this study they measured the blood pressure of a number of Indians who had migrated from a very primitive environment, high in the Andes mountains of Peru, into the mainstream of Peruvian society, at a much lower altitude.

All the data are for males over 21 who were born at high altitude and whose parents were born at high altitude. The variables in the file are:

  1. Age in years
  2. Years since migration
  3. Weight in kilograms
  4. Height in millimeters
  5. Chin skin fold in millimeters
  6. Forearm skin fold in millimeters
  7. Calf skin fold in millimeters
  8. Pulse rate in beats per minute
  9. Systolic blood pressure
  10. Diastolic blood pressure

Your task for this week is simple. Write a SAS program to read the data and use proc means to obtain means and standard deviations for all the variables. Use the first computer handout as a model.

Please bring your log file and your list file to the quiz. Note that the log file and the list file must be from the same SAS job. You will lose very substantial marks if there are any error messages or warnings on your log file.
