For this quiz, you will be allowed a single 8.5 by 11 one-sided formula sheet and a calculator. So write your formula sheet and use it to do the homework. We will supply a copy of the t-table only. As mentioned in class, you can get any z_α you need from the t-table.

Please read pages 1-5 in the Finite Population Handout. The handout has a lot of formulas that took me a while to typeset, but there are really only two new things for which you are responsible.

• Finite population correction factor: When we are sampling without replacement from a finite population, everything is exactly the same as before, except that the (estimated) standard error of the mean is multiplied by the finite population correction factor. This applies to the estimation of proportions as well as more general means. It affects margins of error and confidence intervals -- but not much, if the sample size is small relative to the population size. For the final, you might even consider putting only the formulas with the finite population correction factor on your formula sheet, and the setting the finite population correction factor to one if the population is described as "large" without a specific population size, or if the sampling is with replacement.

  Also, Table 1 contains an important lesson about the finite population correction factor, and you should know what it is.

• Estimation of a population total is possible only if you know the population size, and this means you have a finite population. To estimate a total, multiply everything -- mean, margin of error, and limits of the confidence interval -- by the population size.
