Text
Topics: Most of Chapters 1-9, Chapter 11 (See Table of Contents in textbook)
Grading: There will a quiz at the beginning of class each Wednesday starting with May 23d. The dates are May 23, May 30, June 6, June 13 and June 20. There will also be a final exam. No makeups will be given under any circumstances. If you do not take a quiz, your mark is zero. However,
Quizzes (and the final exam) will be based on weekly homework assignments. Some homework assignments will have a computer part. In this case, you will bring your computer printouts to class and answer questions based on them; printouts may sometimes be handed in. Non-computer homework will never be handed in; you will do it in preparation for the quiz.
Jerry will make up the quizzes and provide Mohammad with his answers. Mohammad will decide on how many points a partially correct answer is worth. Once you fully understand the correct answer to a quiz question (and not before), you may email Mohammad and arrange an interview to discuss the assignment of partial credit. Jerry will not discuss marking until after you have spoken with Mohammad.
Again, you must understand the correct answer to a question before you bother Mohammad about how many points you got. Ask Jerry to help you understand the right answer, during his office hours.
You should understand that since they may be handed in, the computer assignments are not group projects. You are expected to do them yourself. It is acceptable to discuss gereral principles with classmates and to compare answers, but do not copy anyone else's work, and do not allow your work to be copied. If you are caught, terrible things will happen to you. And even if you are not caught, you will be reincarnated as a tadpole in a polluted stream.
