Text John E. Freund's Mathematical statistics with applications
(7th Edition) by I. Miller and M. Miller.
Topics Limiting Distributions and the Central Limit Theorem, Point estimation (with extra material on consistency), Interval estimation, Theory of hypothesis testing, Standard tests for means, variances and proportions, Nonparametric tests. Essentially this means Chapters 10-13 and 16 from the text, plus a bit of supplemental material.
Grading
- Quizzes (20% of Mark): In tutorial, every Wednesday starting Jan 12th, except Feb 23d (the date of the Midterm). Quiz questions will be based closely on homework assignments. Homework is not handed in; you do it to prepare for the quizzes. Quiz dates are Jan. 12, 19, 26, Feb. 2, 9, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, April 6th. No makeups will be given for missed quizzes under any circumstances, and no excuses will be accepted. If you miss a quiz for any reason, the mark is zero. However, your lowest quiz mark will be dropped.
- Midterm Test (30% of Mark): In lecture Feb. 23d.
- Final Exam (50% of Mark): It will be comprehensive, with emphasis on the second half of the course.
