STA218 Assignment for Quiz 7
Quiz on Thursday March 15th at the beginning of
class
For this quiz, you will be allowed a single 8.5 by 11 one-sided
formula sheet and a calculator. So write your formula sheet and use it to do
the homework. We will supply a copy of the t-table only. As mentioned in class, you can get any zα you need from the t-table.
Estimating a proportion
Please read Section 7.7, pages 248-251. You are responsible for the formulas in the blue boxes, except that
- When the book writes x (for example, p-hat equals x over n), we understand it as Σxi , where the xi quantities are zeros and ones.
- What the book calls the margin of error, we are calling the 95% margin of error, and you're responsibe for the (1-α)100% margin of error for any α between zero and one.
- When we are deciding if the sample size is big enough, we will be checking whether p-hat ± three (estimated) standard errors is in the interval from zero to one. That is, we're staying consistent with page 206 rather than page 249.
Please do exercises 7.38, 7.42 and 7.44.
Small-sample estimation for normal data
Please read Section 7.5, pages 233-237. You are responsible for the t distribution, degrees of freedom=n-1, and the (1-α)100% confidence interval for the mean based on normal data.
Please do exercises 7.16, 7.18abc, 7.20 and 7.22ab (assume the data come from a normal distribution).
Do the assigned problems in preparation for the quiz. They are not to be
handed in.
