STA218 Assignment for Quiz 3
Quiz on Thursday Feb 1st at the beginning of class
For this quiz, you will be allowed a single 8.5 by 11 one-sided formula sheet and a calculator. So write your formula sheet and use it to do the homework.
Read pages 89-97. You are responsible for the following concepts: Experiment, Event (the second definition, not the first), Simple event, Sample space, Mutually exclusive, Probability, Tree diagram. Please do Exercises 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8.
Read pages 100-109. You are responsible for the following concepts (including any notation and formulas): Intersection, Union, Disjoint, Complement, P(A)+P(A-bar)=1, Conditional probability P(A|B) and P(B|A), Independent events, Additive rule of probability, Multiplicative rule of probability. Please do Exercises 3.12 (Start by making a Venn diagram), 3.13, 3.15, 3.16, 3.17, 3.18, 3.23. Also do Exercise 3.26. You can do it without using Bayes' rule explicitly. Make a 2 by two (row by column) Venn diagram, use the multiplicative rule to fill in a couple of intersections, and get the rest by subtraction. Then apply the definition of conditional probability to get the answer.
That's enough for now. I will give you some exercises based on the lectures as part of next week's assignment.
Do the assigned problems in preparation for the quiz. They are not to be handed in.
