Recall the Poverty Data from the last assignment. For 97 countries in the world, the file poverty.dat contains data for birth rates, death rates, infant death rates, life expectancies for males and females, and Gross National Product. The variables are:

• Live birth rate per 1,000 of population
• Death rate per 1,000 of population
• Infant deaths per 1,000 of population under 1 year old
• Life expectancy at birth for males
• Life expectancy at birth for females
• Gross National Product per capita in U.S. dollars
• Country Group
  1. Eastern Europe
  2. South America and Mexico
  3. Western Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand
  4. Middle East
  5. Asia
  6. Africa
• Country

Remember you created a new variable that is the difference in life expectancy between Males and Females. If you do Female minus Male they will be mostly positive numbers. Also, make indicator dummy variables for Country Group, with Western Europe etc. the reference category. Then carry out analyses to answer the following questions:

1. Controlling for live birth rate, death rate, infant mortality and gross national product, is country group related to sex difference in life expectancy?
2. Controlling for country group, are live birth rate, death rate, infant mortality and gross national product (tested simultaneously) related to sex difference in life expectancy?
3. By default, you'll also get t-tests for each independent variable controlling for all the others. Be ready to interpret all the t-tests (including those for the dummy variables), and say what the coefficients mean.

• What is the numerical value of the test statistic. The answer is a number.
• What is the p-value? The answer is a number.
• Do you reject the null hypothesis? Are the results statistically significant? Answer Yes or No to each question.
• In language that is as simple and non-statistical as possible, what do you conclude?
