Statistics & ActSci Undergrad Wins Scholarship for Academic Excellence

Congratulations to statistics and actsci student Yiyao Song for being awarded the SCiAN Services Scholarship for Excellence in Applied Statistics.

The $2,500 SCiAN Services Scholarship for Excellence in Applied Statistics is automatically given to the third-year student with the best grade point average in the department’s Applied Statistics Specialist or Statistics Specialist programs. A statistics specialist and actsci major, Song says the scholarship was a big – and very welcome – surprise. She attributes her academic success to the fact that she genuinely enjoys her statistics and actsci studies, as well as testing her skills on solving problems in the field.

“I really like that it’s so diverse. We learn about statistics, combined with programming and analyzing real-world data. These are all critical skills today,” she says.

After her graduation, Song is planning to get her master’s degree. She hopes that her statistics, actsci and critical thinking chops will land her a spot in the department’s Masters of Financial Insurance program.

Congratulations, Yiyao, from the entire department!
